Introduction to Personal Computers

COURSE INTRODUCTION:

This course introduces students to the world of personal computers.

It also teaches a first time user what a computer is and how it works. There is a brief introduction to Windows ‘95 along with sample screens and menus.

The functions of the mouse, keyboard, monitor and printer are also discussed. Students are introduced to software applications and complete tasks that help a first time user understand how and what can be done with a computer.

SUITABLE FOR:

Those who have never used a computer previously and would like to start with the basics.

COURSE AIM:

To provide a basic understanding of personal computers along with an understanding of their usage.

Lesson 1:

Introduction. The Computer System; What is a Computer?; History of the Digital Computer; Types of Computers; IBM, Apple & Compatible Computers; Main Elements of Computers; The Central Processing Unit; Input Devices; Keyboard; Mouse; Scanners; Fax-Modem; Other Input Devices; Output Devices; Dot-Matrix, Ink-Jet & Laser Printers; StorageDevices; Operating Systems.

Lesson 2:

Working with a Computer. Switching On & Off; Start-Up Sequence; Using a Mouse; Mouse Techniques.

Lesson 3:

Operating Systems & Graphical User Interfaces. Dos; Windows ‘95; Windows ’95 Environment.

Lesson 4:

Application Software. Software Categories; What is a Spreadsheet? What is a Wordprocessor Application.

Lesson 5:

Application Software. What is a Database Application?; What is a Presentation Application?

Lesson 6:

Networks. Local Area Networks; Peer to Peer; Client Server; Wide Area Networks; Sharing Files; Data Security; Terminology; The Internet; (ISP) Internet Service Providers; Web Browsers; Electronic Mail.

Course material is provided as an ongoing reference.

A certificate is issued upon the student’s completion of the course and on attaining a pass mark of 75% or higher for the fin
